Isn't it funny how your impression of products can change over time?! That's exactly why I like doing these reviews of items I get in my monthly Ipsy bags in two parts - first impressions and a wrap-up post of what worked and didn't (i.e. hits and misses). What is Ipsy? Each month you get a small makeup bag filled with a mix of 3-5 deluxe samples and full sized beauty products for $10. Here are the Hits & Misses from my January 2014 Ipsy Glam Bag!

Hit: Mica Beauty Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in #06 Fiesta

I personally liked this lip product, but I think I am one of very few that did! This is called a 'tinted lip balm' which leads most consumers to believe that this is would be sheer (tinted), comfortable, and moisturizing ('balm'-y). The Mica Beauty Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm is none of the things you think of when you think 'tinted lip balm'. I find it to be an opaque, matte, slightly drying lip color. It leaves a light stain once the greasy, "balmy" texture wears away. Despite the fact that it is slightly drying, I love the color - so it ends up as a "hit" for me from this January Ipsy bag!

PS. There is a weird texture in this photo of my balm because I have used it with a small stippling brush as a blush, too, because I'm all about that.

Meh: These two 'mehs' are both really generally nice products, I just don't think I would purchase the normal retail version of them. I just don't need them, you know?

Nourish Organic Lightweight Moisturizing Face Lotion

Smells great and lives up to its name of being 'lightweight'!! I would consider purchasing this for hotter months since it would be perfect and refreshing in the middle of the summer. Not quite so much in January >.<

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask

I have mixed feelings on this deep conditioning hair mask. It DOES make my damaged ends very shiny and nice looking, but it doesn't really make them super soft/supple - mostly shiny. As far as 'deep conditioning' it does moisturize, but this isn't the most deep conditioning mask I have ever tried. I feel like there are more affordable, better options readily available.

Also it sort of weirds me out that this mask lathers once I put it in my hair? Like, why is a conditioner lathering without my handsy scrubbing action? That just seems weird...

Miss: Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow Creamy Eye Pencil in Pearl

Not only did this product perform really poorly compared to how super freaking beautiful it is when it swatches, I seem to be allergic to it, too! Extra disappoint. This pencil is sooooper smooth when you draw on your hands with it (i.e. swatching, you know) but doesn't seem to want to stick on my eyelids. It doesn't do much as an eyeshadow base, and it doesn't adhere to the inner corners or waterline well (despite being waterproof and budge-proof on my hand).

This is the first eye product that has given me severe irritation when used on the waterline; I had some swollen bottom lids for two days after testing this pencil out :( [PS. The above photo was taken the first day I tested the pencil] It didn't cause my upper eyelid any trouble when I wore it as a shadow base tho, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dishonorable Mention: Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads

As I mentioned in my first impressions post about this bag, I didn't feel like risking it with these pads for two reasons - 1.) them messing up my skin and drying them out because of the high alcohol content and 2.) trying them and loving them and then having to pay $20-40 for the whole Proactiv+ system. I did not try them.

Overall

So basically with this bag I paid $10 (including shipping, and let's be real shipping is usually $5-6) for a lip product I like (yay!) and two deluxe samples of products that I enjoyed trying, but won't repurchase (again, generally yay!). That seems like a pretty decent since I calculated the values of those three samples as being $30.16. Not bad, not bad!

St. Paddy's 2014 Makeup Look

One of my favorite things about holidays is that they allow a little more wiggle room in terms of beauty looks. Today I wanted to share my St. Paddy's Day #fotd with you - a fun mix of lush greens and golds, complimented by bright orange. For a detailed explanation of the products I used for this look read on!

The Digit-al Dozen does Brands: Jupiña Pineapple Soda

Today is the last day of this month's Digit-al Dozen theme of 'brands'. I've really enjoyed this week! It was such a fun challenge for me to really try a variety of patterns and practice my freehanding. Plus everything is so cheerful when you pick such delightful packaging! Ending this week with a bang I have some super fun pineapple-y nails inspired by a new fave - Jupiña Pineapple Soda!

The Digit-al Dozen does Brands: Café Bustelo

This Digit-al Dozen theme of 'brands' has been so much more fun than I thought it would be! Moving along, today's nail art focuses on another one of my favorite mostly Miami-centric things - Café Bustelo!!

The Digit-al Dozen does Brands: Kiss My Face Sunscreen

For today's Digit-al Dozen design inspired by a brand I'm focusing on an important everyday product - instead of a restaurant (finally, I've been so hungry these past two days!). Florida is the Sunshine State and I am very fair-skinned, which means I have an alarm on my phone to tell me to re-apply sunblock every two hours [all day long]. Check out my nails inspired by the current sunscreen I'm using - Kiss My Face!

The Digit-al Dozen does Brands: Pollo Tropical Nail Art

Moving right along with the Digit-al Dozen theme this month of 'brands', today's design focuses on another Miami-centric restaurant which is making my stomach growl! Today I'm sharing some fun and bright nails with a relatively simple color palette inspired by the delicious restaurant Pollo Tropical! I'm loving this loud nail art on my short nails :)

The Digit-al Dozen does Brands: 100 Montaditos

This month's Digit-al Dozen theme is 'brands' - a fun and challenging theme indeed! Since I recently relocated to Miami and have finally been here long enough to have some new local favorites, I'm doing a ~theme within a theme~ this week by focusing on Miami-centric brands I like. First up this week is nail art inspired by a fun restaurant called 100 Montaditos!

Three MORE Basic Nail Care Tips!

Three More Basic Nail Care Tips: Super Easy Ways to Have Healthier Nails! | Manicurity.com
Last week I wrote a fun post with three tips on how to have healthy nails - Basic Nail Care Tips Part One if you will (you should go read it here, then come right on back to this post!). I enjoyed writing that post so much AND it seemed to be really fun for y'all to read, too. So today I am back with THREE MORE GREAT basic nail care tips!

Three More Ways to Have Healthy Nails*

*A guide from a normal human lady, and not a person that is a professionally trained nail technician. These tips are mostly common sense style and should be both entertaining and actually helpful :)

Three More Basic Nail Care Tips: Super Easy Ways to Have Healthier Nails! | Manicurity.com
from my Anime nail art post

#1 - Are your nails are trying to tell you something?!

Sometimes it seems like your nails are yelling at you, and you're not listening (or maybe that's just me?). If you're dead set on keeping your nails in a square shape, but the corners of your nails snap off frequently then a) you're probably flailing too much + not moisturizing enough (read more about that in Basic Nail Care Tips Pt. 1) and b) not really listening to what your nails want you to hear.

Tip: Your chosen nail shape is too hard to maintain at the length you want? Why not switch the shape up! Squares with broken corners can easily become beautiful squovals or rounded nails without losing length.

#2 - Skip the alcohol* - at least on your hands!

*And especially if you're below the drinking age in whatever country you're in.

Listen, I'm not here to judge what you do on your own time when it comes to fancy adult beverages. But I am here to tell you to stop putting alcohol on your hands! You might be all "But Emma, I am most definitely not pouring alcohol on my hands every day!" and to that I say "Are you sure?".

Tip: Make sure you're checking the ingredients of products - especially hand soaps and lotions.

#3 - Give me Moderately Warm Water, or Give Me Death!

Luckily I live wayyyy too far south to be stuck in the Polar Vortex this year, but this tip goes out to all my friends suffering through the frigid cold. Hot water feels like the only almost-free luxury when you're wearing like 4 layers of clothing and a blanket and it's a beautiful 5 degrees outside BUT hot water zaps the moisture out of your hot bod!

Tip: Use warm, not super hot, water when washing your hands (or your hair and body)! It's much less damaging and you won't have to spend as much time or $ on products to put back all the moisture you just stripped away.

BONUS TIP: Pat it Down

I feel like this is common sense, but it never hurts to remember: after you've used your moderately warm, but not hot, water - pat dry instead of roughly smooshing, squeezing, rubbing with a towel. There's probably a lot of actual worse things in life, but roughly rubbing your hands dry after using too-hot water while washing your hands in winter (also a tongue twister to try when you are bored, you are welcome) feels like you're giving yourself an Indian rug burn. No thanks, self. No thanks.

Tip: Gently pat dry with a towel, instead of being rough on yourself. Unrelated to adorable sloth gif, but the sloth has a towel so at least we're on topic!

Special thanks to Bee of Bee Polished for reminding me of tips #2 and #3. She is an awesome blogger and trained nail profesh so I love when she share her nuggets of knowledge with me!

Ipsy Glam Bag December 2013 Hits & Misses

Manicurity - Ipsy Glam Bag December 2013 Hits & Misses

No, that's not a typo. I really am posting my December ipsy bag product reviews in March! Because I live in Miami my bags get here laughably slow. Like to the point that I assume they have been stolen and a postal person somewhere is looking extra pretty every month. And because I really believe in giving products a chance before making a decision about them my reviews usually take a little bit of time to actually test the makeup (a little envious of people that know themselves well enough to have a very specific and definite opinion of an entirely new-to-them product like minutes within getting it, or maybe that's sarcasm not sure). ANYHOOOO, this post is a little pic heavy because Ipsy is a subscription service that is a little heavy on the color cosmetic items (i.e. makeuppppp) with a sprinkling of beauty tools (eyelashes and brushes) and occasional skincare stuff, too! For me reviewing color cosmetics means lots of photos so you can get a better grasp of the products in different lighting, in the pan, how it swatches, on my face, etc. Read on to find out what I got in my bag and which products are hits and misses for me!!
