Purple Pond Manicure

So the first Lazy Blogger's 31 Day Challenge of this week is to recreate something. Kirsten, my Lazy Blogger partner in crime, is a very nice person and recreated something of mine from this challenge (check out her take on my teeny tiny flowers here!) while I on the other hand am a big jerk and recreated something else... THE POND MANICURE! I love the original one with flowers (see the original by Olive View Fashion here) so much that while I've been itching to do a pond mani for 'tutorial day' or whatever, I couldn't think of anything except doing flowers. Thus I present to you my purple pond nails!

Constellation Nails - Easy Nail Art Idea!

This might be my favorite manicure...ever? Mostly because it is so darn cute but also because it is quick, easy, and doesn't require a lot of polishes (or even fancy polishes at that). How easy and cheap? Let me tell you! These only took me like 15 minutes to do (from base coat all the way to top coat) and you could buy the 3 polishes I used for this mani for roughly $3 at a drugstore. DAT'S RIGHT. Amazing! Click through and let me tell you with my beautiful words about how you, too, can get these starry starry nails :)

It's All Greek to Me! Double-Stamped Nails

Today's nail art prompt is 'inspired by a book'. I've recently been reading the Percy Jackson series, which is both entertaining and incredibly easy to read because it's for a much younger audience. Instead of doing something literal from the different stories, I've done a more abstract Greek-inspired double-stamped manicure! Check 'em!

Digit-al Dozen: Mermaid Nails in Shades of Teal

I may have saved my personal fave for last because I'm hugely into blues and teals!! I have always wanted to try out the Little Nails Mermaid Nail Tutorial and finally found the inspiration and time to tackle it for monochrome week. I think these are the most dots I have ever taken the time to do, ha! Read on for more photos and my #1 tip for making the 'scale' effect a little easier.

Digit-al Dozen: Freehand Purple Urban Camo Nails

Let me explain the title: these nails are inspired by an awesome gift box from Urban Outfitters that held one of my Christmas presents (and being the pack rat that I am I kept it because I love the pattern so much). Its complicate blotchy pattern reminds me a little bit of camo, and because it's from Urban Outfitters and because it has sort of modern patterns on it it makes me think of street art i.e. urban (modern city + first name of store) camo. In real life I think these nails look a lot more like lace than the box and/or camo, but I like them anyway!

Digit-al Dozen: And It Was All Yellow... Striped Nails!

Something I've been making a conscious effort to improve on with my nail art for 2014 is tri-fold - 1.) using colors I don't use as frequently (i.e. yellow, like today, and pink, etc.) 2.) using more exciting polish finishes (I'm sort of a die-hard creme + glitter topper thru and thru, most likely because cremes don't make me cry when I'm trying to clean up 'round the edges) and 3.) keep on keeping on with freehand stuff (i.e. get better) Luckily for me, and maybe for you if you like adorably wonky freehand stripes and yellow nail polish, I've actually been remembering these 3 goals this week for MONOCHROME week! Today I present these 'lovingly freehanded ombre striped nails).

Becca's The One Perfecting Brush claims it can replace 10 of your current beauty tools AND cut your makeup application time in half, which is a pretty huge deal. So is The One + my makeup routine meant to be?! Totally! I'm smitten with how quick and seamless it makes the HACing process (i.e. highlighting and contouring) when I'm in the mood to go all-out with my face makeup.

Ai Weiwei Colored Vases inspired Double Drip Nails

Happy Saturday! Today is 'inspired by artwork' which is one of my favorite themes (poor Kirsten doesn't like this theme as much as I do but her nails for today are beautiful and incredibly moving - check them out here). I recently saw a fantastic exhibit of Ai Weiwei works at the newly opened PĂ©rez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and have had his stuff on my brain since. I was especially enamored with his marble sculptures (but those are impossible to make into nail arts) and his manipulation of traditional artifacts like painting ancient vases (easier to translate into nail arts!). So here are my 'double drip' nails inspired by Weiwei's Colored Vases!!

Freehand Lace Skittles Nail Art

Today's challenge is to do something delicate, which I blame on Kirsten because this is one of her choices!! I am usually baffled by this prompt because I don't feel like a particularly ~delicate~ person. But I've finally taken the time to do some skittle'd freehand lace nails! These were a little more time consuming than normal, but I watched a fairly good movie while doing them so no complaints from me :) Read on to find out how I did these designs!

Nimbus Dotticure

Ah, polka dots! Dots are one of my favorite nail art things - so easy and fun, and super relaxing for me. Since I feel like I've done a lot of different kinds of dotty nail art I wanted to try something new and different - enter the 'Nimbus Dotticure' using The Nailasaurus Nimbus Technique (see her original tutorial here). Check it out!

Manicurity | Nimbus Dotticure (polka dot nails using nimbus technique)

Manicurity | Nimbus Dotticure (polka dot nails using nimbus technique)

I used three coats of Zoya Dove as my base - a nice light grey creme. Then I used some other Zoya polishes - Tobey (pink), Arizona (orange), Tracie (foily green), Bevin (pastel teal), Yummy (bright pastel blue) - and did some 'halo'd dots - i.e. used the Nimbus technique but spaced the dots out purposefully. Basically this is like the first step of the Nimbus technique because I want to see the dots when I'm done! Then I layered up each little 'halo' until I liked the way it looked. Final step was to use a dotting tool to make an opaque dot centered on each 'stack' of halos.

Manicurity | Nimbus Dotticure (polka dot nails using nimbus technique)

Manicurity | Nimbus Dotticure (polka dot nails using nimbus technique)

I did not use top coat to finish this (altho I did use it before doing the dots because I am impatient and quick dry helps me know what it feels like to be a god) - the texture is less obvious in person because these photos are like 5000x larger than real life. I like that the dots stand out a lil more this way IRL BUT I will probably top coat as an experiment later anyway :p While I like this on the grey base, I think it would have been just a smidge more 'WOW!' for me on a white base. Although it does match the dreary weather here right now!!

Anyhoo, don't forget to check out my BBF (best blogging friend) Kirsten over at Geeky Owl and see her dotty nails today :D Now let me know in the comments - do you like this look? Is this something you would try?!

Introducing The Lazy Blogger's 31 Day Challenge with an Impressionist Floral Freehand Mani!

For the past two Januarys Kirsten of Geeky Owl and I have done the 31 Day Challenge (you know the one). But I'm simply not disciplined or ruthless enough to do high quality nail art literally every day (and erase each one in the process). SO this year Kirsten and I decided to be 'lazy bloggers'! We both picked 6 of our favorite themes from the 31 different themes and are spreading them out on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Today is 'inspired by a pattern' and I chose an abstract, almost impressionist floral pattern. Check 'em!

Manicurity | Introducing The Lazy Blogger's 31 Day Challenge with an Impressionist Floral Freehand Mani!

Manicurity | Introducing The Lazy Blogger's 31 Day Challenge with an Impressionist Floral Freehand Mani!
(sadly this baller pattern doesn't seem to be available at Urban Outfitters anymore *sadface*)
*heavy sigh* THIS to me is basically perfect nail art because it's so easy and FUN to do because it's abstracted. A little of this, a little of that here and there and ta-dah! So splotchy and dotty you can do it on both hands equally well :) I used dotting tools to do messy blobs, an orange stick to 'draw' shapes with the pointy end, and the brushes from the polish bottles to do the larger splotches. For the thin black details I used a cut-down brush and black acrylic paint - but it looked equally as nice without the black accents (maybe even better).

YOUR Favorite Manicurity Posts from 2013

Just a quick little recap of some of the 'best of' Manicurity posts from the past year. These top three posts were 'voted' on by y'all through your clicks (i.e. these are most popular by sheer pageview statistics). I'm a little shocked by the #2 popular post, maybe you will be, too?!

#3 - my summer-time post about the magical and often wondered about unicorn of a coupon - the 20% off anything coupon that came out in July. These coupons come out 'randomly' and actually include things you want to get savings shaved off of - those bloody 'prestige' brands!! [And by 'randomly' I assume these coupons have to do with boosting the ends of quarterly sales numbers of the Ulta corporation, but whatever, this is not a consumerism critique blog]. Click here to read the original post because it includes a fun list of 8 of My Holy Grail recommendations available at Ulta!

#2 - Is sort of a surprise to me! I so wish I had done better photos - or rather, photos in a better room that doesn't have highlighter yellow walls (I don't really miss those yellow walls too much now that I've moved... *wink*) Anyhoo, my DIY Brush Scrubber Board was a popular post since it is a crafty "dupe" (I say that with massive air quote motions) of the Sigma Brush Cleaning Glove. Read the full post here!

*cue drum rolllllllllll*

#1 - the most popular post for this year by a landslide is THE STORAGE DEBATE! What really are the exact differences between a Helmer and Melmer?! I am so happy that this post has stayed relevant and helpful to the community. I know there's a new crop of polishaholics almost every single day, and I like to think (err, pretend?) that this post is helping y'all out. Read all the details about Helmers vs. Melmers here!

Was there a different memorable post you wish had made this list, or did I mention your favorite post?! Don't forget to check out MY Top 6 Posts from 2013 and Six More Favorite Posts from 2013 lists :D
