The Digit-al Dozen does Brands: Café Bustelo

This Digit-al Dozen theme of 'brands' has been so much more fun than I thought it would be! Moving along, today's nail art focuses on another one of my favorite mostly Miami-centric things - Café Bustelo!!

What is Café Bustelo?

Café Bustelo is espresso ground coffee that comes in cheerfully bright yellow packaging. It's fairly inexpensive and has been the espresso of choice in my home for a while (including while living in Atlanta). Luckily for me it's even less expensive and easier to find in Miami! I brew Café Bustelo in a moka pot and then steam some milk for at-home lattes = delicious!

About This Design

To get the yellow color as close to the Café Bustelo packaging as possible, I utilized a technique called 'overpainting' - also known in nail polish as 'layering' [ha ha]. First I did 3-ish coats of Color Club Almost Famous until it was opaque. Then I mixed a custom shade using Orly Glowstick, a teeny drop of CND Green Scene, a few drops of OPI Fiercely Fiona, and more Color Club Almost Famous to try to mimic the slightly green-tinted yellow that verges slightly on neon of Café Bustelo. I brushed the custom polish color on all nails with a large flat paint brush (think twice the size of an OPI Pro-Wide).

This is my first attempt at spreading a single design element over multiple nails (that I can remember anyway). The result is okay I guess? The triangle bits on my pinkie and middle nail line up with my ring finger well enough but I'm not overly in love with it.  My attempt at the beautiful lady drinking coffee looks a lot more zombie-lady than I intended, but that's alright because I feel like a zombie before my morning coffee :p

The weird shapes are meant to be coffee beans, inspired by the subtle coffee beans in this Café Bustelo advert. Honestly I think I just tried too many things in one design; a case of less is more perhaps?

Don't forget to check out the other Digit-al Dozen designs for today in the gallery below!

  4. Oh this is very, very cool! I didn't know anyone drank Cafe Bustelo other than my Ecuadorian mother and my Ecuadorian extended family! ;) I also didn't know it was a Miami-base brand since I saw it in my New York home all day every day growing up! Fantastic nail art - sooo well done!!!
