Ipsy Glam Bag January 2014 - First Impressions

  Affiliate Link*

Readers, either rejoice or roll your eyes because I have finally joined IPSY! This is the first beauty-centric subscription service that I am truly excited about and have received two months in a row (sorry, Julep *womp womp*). So, what is Ipsy? Each month you get a small makeup bag filled with 3-5 deluxe samples and full sized beauty products - pretty much anything you can think of relating to beauty, like makeup, brushes, hair care, skin care, fragrances, nail items, you name it! It's a fun and inexpensive way to try new products and brands since it's $10 (and no extra shipping fees). Read on to find out what came in my January 2014 Glam Bag and my first impressions with these products!!

Each Glam bag has a theme and for January it is '19 Reasons'. I'm assuming this theme is celebrating the different brand partnerships for 2014. This month I didn't peek at the products I was getting in my 'Glam Room' so I was truly surprised and excited when my little bag of goodies arrived (unlike my first month, December, where I knew what I was getting and was all 'meh' about them in advance).

Here's what I received in my January Glam bag: Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads, Nourish Organics Face Lotion, Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair, Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow Eye Pencil, and Mica Beauty Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in a blue makeup bag with the outlines of products on it. Sadly, this bag smells awful and I'm not sure if it will ever air out?! I'll work my way down from the top of this photo and show you each product in a bit more detail.

Proactiv+ Mark Fading Pads

sample size: four wipes valued at $??? // only available as part of the monthly Proactiv system

TBH, I am nervous about trying these because they contain a lot of alcohol and that could wreck my oily/combo skin by drying it out (and then my poor face would try to compensate with more oil, etc.). Also what if I DO use these and I love them?! I'm not ready to pay $30-40 a month for a Proactiv subscription...

Ipsy Glam Bag January 2014 - First Impressions - Nourish Organic Lightweight Moisturizing Face Lotion with Argan + Rosewater | Manicurity.com

Nourish Organic Lightweight Moisturizing Face Lotion

- with Argan + Rosewater

sample size: 0.5 oz valued at $6.46

This lotion says it all right in the name - super lightweight! I like this sample size because it's just enough to use this a few times to decide if you like it or not (but not too much product that you feel bad about tossing it if it doesn't work for you). It smells nice and fresh but not overpowering.

Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask

sample size: 1oz valued at $4.95

This Briogeo deep conditioning mask smells so fab! It's consistency is a lot lighter and more viscous than what a 'deep conditioning mask' brings to my mind. With my naturally curly hair I'm always on the look out for a good moisturizer sans parabens and silicones.

Elizabeth Mott Smooth Shadow Creamy Eye Pencil in Pearl

sample size: .7g valued at $6.99

The Elizabeth Mott Shadow Eye Pencil is a gel pencil that's supposed to be waterproof. I thought this was gorgeous when I swatched it on my hand - really beautiful mutlicolored bursts of shimmery awesomeness! The base is a light yellow-gold with these 'sparks' of shimmer; the plastic lid is really well matched to what the color of the product actually looks like IMO. Seems like the perfect thing for highlighting the inner corners of eyes and possibly the waterline!

Here are some snaps of the two colored cosmetics in this bag from a little bit further away (because our eyes aren't always like an inch from a swatch when we're looking at them IRL). Top is indirect light, bottom is full on sunshine.

Mica Beauty Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in #06 Fiesta

sample size: 2.5g valued at $18.75

I got the Mica Beauty Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in the more exciting shade - FIESTA! This is a really 'me' color and I'm happy that I got this one. I'm actually wearing it in all of the photos of my face in this post!! I would say this is a fushia-y color, which is the family of colors I like most as lip products. In person I feel like it pulls a little teeny bit more purply, tho. This lip balm is supposed to be 'kiss proof' and 'smudge proof' so I will be puttin' this to the test!

Overall

The total value for my January Ipsy bag is $37.15 (not including the Proactiv+ sample and the bag itself, which I find hard to place a value on in general and especially this month with how blech it smells). I know a lot of people were unhappy with this month's bag but I was excited about mine because, as I said wayyy earlier in this post, I actually enjoyed being totally surprised by the products in this bag as I pulled each one out vs. accidentally knowing what I was going to get ahead of time because of the 'Glam Room' on the Ipsy website. I also found these products to be things I would enjoy trying - the lotion and deep conditioner are practical and the colors of the makeup items I received were colors I like! This month my beautiful pink metallic mailer (picture above) arrived a lot later than my December mailer (hence this post being later than usual, excusesexcuses).

Looking Ahead

Because I like to really test products before I have a final opinion about them (and write full reviews on them), I'm going to try and do both 'First Impression' posts and 'Hits and Misses' posts for each bag. For instance, I was really UNexcited about my December bag and would have written a rather bummed-out, negative review at the get-go. But! After using the products for a month, I am SO happy with one of the items from my December bag and I use it every single day, which deserves a mention. So be on the look out for my December 2013 Ipsy Glam Bag Hits & Misses post soon! In the future my plan is to post my 'Hits and Misses' post from the previous month before I do my 'First Impressions' from the current month (hopefully that makes sense)

  2. We got the same exact samples. Have you figured out if the eye pencil twists up or not?

    1. It seems like it would be a twist up because of the material, but it's not! It sharpens really easily in a normal eye pencil sharpener tho :)

    1. Yay! So far, so good! I love that it's only $10 so even if most of the things aren't quite right it's still a fun little thing to get. I do Julep occasionally, but I skip more than I get because I just have so much polish already >.<

  6. I got the same box as you! I'm with you on the Proactiv--I'm not putting alcohol on my face, sorry! Also not sure why the Mica lip color is called a "lip balm", since it doesn't really feel moisturizing at all!

    1. Yes and yes! I'm so happy to have someone else say they weren't going to bother with the wipes; I feel a little bit sassy that I'm all "Not even going to TRY this!" because I'm typically pretty openminded. And I totally agree - the lip balm is not at all balmy or moisturizing >.< I feel like it needs a name change :p
