Digit-al Dozen: And It Was All Yellow... Striped Nails!

Something I've been making a conscious effort to improve on with my nail art for 2014 is tri-fold - 1.) using colors I don't use as frequently (i.e. yellow, like today, and pink, etc.) 2.) using more exciting polish finishes (I'm sort of a die-hard creme + glitter topper thru and thru, most likely because cremes don't make me cry when I'm trying to clean up 'round the edges) and 3.) keep on keeping on with freehand stuff (i.e. get better) Luckily for me, and maybe for you if you like adorably wonky freehand stripes and yellow nail polish, I've actually been remembering these 3 goals this week for MONOCHROME week! Today I present these 'lovingly freehanded ombre striped nails).

Does this style have an official name or am I doing it right by simply saying 'ombre stripes'? Anyhoo I most recently spotted this design over on Fundamentally Flawless while I was peeping around the internet for inspiration and then Laurie at Dressed Up Digits did a beautiful plummy stripe design yesterday (see her's here!). I sort of wish I was more normal and had done a few less colors, but of course doing 6 colors really makes it fun and time-consuming!!

Even if this did take me longer than expected [after all this time I'm still surprised by this?!], I love the mix of textures I've got going on with all of these layers. I used a rather sheer glass fleck Color Club near the middle which gives it a lot of dimension and catches the light really beautiful. Two other layers have some subtle shimmer in them, too, so it's very fun to look up all close and personal.

For the first three colors I was able to use the polish brush right from the bottle to do my stripes, but I had to switch to a liner brush dipped in polish for the smaller 3 stripes. These are far from perfect up close (and macro) but at the normal distance my hands stay from my face in typical situations (like typing right now) these are really pretty and super cheerful. Their freehanded wonkiness makes me think of a handmade quilt, tho, so I'm into that. Yellow was a great choice tho, yay! Love 'em!

Now check out the other Digit-al Dozen designs for today below! Are we kicking A this week or what?!

  8. So I usually don't like studs (on fingernails that is), but I really think they make this mani! I love it! And for some reason I keep thinking Rainbow Brite. Don't know why? Maybe her hair? Who knows. :)
