Happy Saturday! Today is 'inspired by artwork' which is one of my favorite themes (poor Kirsten doesn't like this theme as much as I do but her nails for today are beautiful and incredibly moving - check them out here). I recently saw a fantastic exhibit of Ai Weiwei works at the newly opened Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and have had his stuff on my brain since. I was especially enamored with his marble sculptures (but those are impossible to make into nail arts) and his manipulation of traditional artifacts like painting ancient vases (easier to translate into nail arts!). So here are my 'double drip' nails inspired by Weiwei's Colored Vases!!
First I painted two coats of China Glaze Desert Sun for a terracotta-esque base color (ps. I didn't realize that this is a totally delicious jelly color! My nails looked like caramels!). I topped it with a matte top coat to mimic the stone texture before doing my colored drips.
To get the drips I loaded up polish on one end of my nail and let it get messy (basically). I used a drinking straw to sort of push the polish around to try and get a more realistic paint dribbly effect, plus gravity helped me a bit. I think it worked fairly well with the straw, but the proportions are a little off between a drinking straw and my nails; I think a coffee stir stick that would act as a mini straw might have been a little bit better.
Then I did the same process, but from the other end of my nail so that the two paint parts overlapped a bit. I didn't add top coat when I was done because I like the bumpy texture and layers as they are!!
Do you like messy nail art like this, or do you prefer your's to be more orderly?! I like how colorful this is but would like the drips if they were smaller in scale. Hope you're having a great weekend
