The Digit-al Dozen: Freehand Floral Pattern Bone China Nails

Continuing with our theme of celebrating The Digit-al Dozen's 2nd Anniversary, today's theme is 'china'. China (i.e. dishes and fine tea cup sets) is the ~modern~ 2nd anniversary gift according to gift-giving traditions. I haven't actually done a classic white and blue china-themed manicure yet so I was really excited for these! Check 'em out!

The Design

I based my nail design off of this photo and enjoyed doing some freehand work for this!! I haven't had a lot of time to sit down and do lots of small details so this was a nice little change of pace for me this week. Originally I had wanted to go a step further and do a broken pattern on top of this freehand floral pattern BUT I don't think the scale would work well since I have already used my teeny tiniest brush to accomplish the small stripes in this design. I'll save that idea for a different time :)

The Polishes

I did three coats of OPI My Vampire is Buff (yes, I finally bought this polish and can feel like a real nail blogger again now that it's in my possession) as a base coat. Then I used Sally Hansen Thinking of Blue for my main patterns as well as a tiny bit of grey and a tiny bit of gold to do some accents. I used a bunch of my small brushes to freehand this!

The Digit-al Dozen: Stamped Sapphire Birthstone Jewelry Nail Art

Since September is the birth month of The Digit-al Dozen, it only makes sense to honor her (yep, totes calling The DD a her now) with some birthstone-inspired nails. For all of you beauties born in September, you have a pretty awesome birthstone in the form of sapphire. Today I was planning to do some freehand faceted sapphire gemstone nail art using Chalkboard Nail's totally fantastic tutorial (see her tutorial here) however Jacki over at Adventures in Acetone already did the same design for today and it looks so flawless (plus our nails are the same size/shape right now) SO I figured I should do something else. Now I have these jewelry-inspired stamping nails with some hand-placed glitter accents to show you!

The Digit-al Dozen: Stamped Sapphire Birthstone Jewelry Nail Art | Manicurity.com @emmathea

The Design

For this manicure I finally broke out some still-wrapped Pueen 24E Love Elements plates that I've had for an embarrassingly long time and stamped some jewelry-esque images onto my nails with silver foil. I'm not sure if my polish was drying too quickly, I'm too tired, or my plates are sort of meh but I felt like the images that were transferring were just so-so *giant frowny face*. I tried to salvage this design with some holo glitter to represent diamonds and sapphires, so hopefully that did the trick!

The Polishes & Supplies

My base color was Sinful Colors Midnight Blue, a slightly-blackened metallic blue polish. It took three coats for the coverage I liked, but it was easy and nice to paint with. The silver polish I used to stamp with was Barry M Silver Foil and I used images from plates Pueen 31 and Pueen 26.

Now check out the other sapphire designs below!

The Digit-al Dozen does Cotton: A Patchwork Quilt-Inspired Manicure using DIY Stamping Decals

Our second manicure theme is 'cotton' since the traditional two year anniversary gift is cotton!! My first thought was to do something inspired simply by cotton fabric since I could easily do another fun floral manicure, but instead I thought I would try a new-to-me technique and go for a whole quilt look! For this manicure I challenged myself to doing DIY stamping decals - basically making nail wraps out of a stamped image that you fill in with other colors. Check 'em out!

The Digit-al Dozen does Cotton: A Patchwork Quilt-Inspired Manicure using DIY Stamping Decals | Manicurity.com @emmathea

The Design & Process

I used my most patchwork-quilt-esque stamping plate to do this design - the two quilt images from my Lilic A01 plate. To do these 'decals' I painted 5 rectangles of clear top coat onto a Ziploc sandwich bag and waited for them to dry. Then I stamped my images onto the center of each little rectangle of clear coat using a black polish.

Finally I filled in all the spaces I wanted to be colored with tiny brushes and tons of different polishes - this step was very relaxing and fun, but also hella time consuming! I used a variety of polishes - mostly from Cult Nails. If you have a question about a specific shade, please ask me in the comments :D

To place my decals I worked one nail at a time. I applied a non-quick-dry top coat to the nail, placed the decal, then topcoatted over the top of it to set it. Then I tried to gently removed the excess decal with an orange stick and manicure scissors. Any extra leftovers were removed with a brush and acetone since it's all made of dried nail polish!

I wish I had taken better photos to show you the process, but I usually am too focused on the task at hand (har har) to remember to stop and take pics! While this was a TON of work and time, it did look super amazing and was totally worth it. I plan on trying this technique again in the future ;D

The Digit-al Dozen Does The Terrific Twos! Celebrating Our 2nd Anniversary with an Evil Eye Half Moon Manicure

I can't believe that it's the second anniversary of The Digit-al Dozen already!! This week we're focusing on different themes for each day that relate to the momentous occasion. For our first nail art mani the theme is 'things that come in pairs' and after a huge mental block, I finally decided on an evil eye half moon mani! Check 'em out!

The Design

The evil eye half moon manicure isn't a particularly original idea, but I hadn't tackled many eye-related manicures for the blog yet SO I thought it would be fun to do! To set off the sky blue eye design I did a contrasting base of orange since blue and orange are complimentary colors. I wanted just a smidge more interest in the base so I did a saran wrap texture with a somewhat chunky gold foil polish over the orange creme base. The contrast was super fun!

The Polishes & Supplies

First I did two coats of Deborah Lippmann's Lara's Theme, an orange crelly-creme base. After it was set I did the saran wrap technique with Catrice Goldfinger, a chunky-particle gold foil polish. The eyes were freehanded with Zoya Purity (white), China Glaze Bahamian Escape (#1 most talked about sky blue polish on my blog), and Cult Nails Nevermore (black).

The Digit-al Dozen: Soft Tie Dye Neon Flip Flop Nail Art

I am so pleasantly surprised at how much I like today's manicure! Recently on my Manicurity Facebook page I sneakily tried to ask for inspiration for my summer manicures by asking y'all to fill in the blank about "when I think of summer, I think of _____." A lot of you said 'neon', 'pedicure' or 'neon pedicure' and thus I was inspired to do this splodgy neon manicure with flip flop stamping :D

About the Design

I had contemplated painting tiny feet on my fingernails and painting on their little bitty neon toe nails, but I realized that I don't use my thematic stamping plates nearly enough. Thus this neon rainbow splodgy/tie-dye background + contrasty flip flop pattern was born!

^^this is how vibrant it looks in person

The Polishes & Supplies

To get the fun neon base I first did two coats of Zoya Purity, my current go-to white creme polish. Then I dabbed little overlaping blobs of neon China Glaze polishes onto a makeup sponge before rolling it across my nails. The technique is similar to making a gradient but instead of mixing between two shades and blending it onto your nail, you blend the splotches of color together.

I used the flip flop pattern from a Bundle Monster set (the 300 plates) in Cult Nails Nevermore, and topped it all with KBShimmer Clearly on Top! Hooray!

The Digit-al Dozen x #TBT: Grassy 'Waterfall' Nail Art

Hello hello! Today I've got a fun combo of The Digital Dozen's 'summer' theme + a #ThrowbackThursday re-do manicure! Last summer I did a guest post for Dizzy Little Digits that featured a grassy half moon with a rainbow french tip (and a fuzzy sheep!) - see that post here. So I re-did my grassy half moon idea with a pretty cloudy sky background using different polish finishes. Check 'em out!

The Digit-al Dozen x #ThrowbackThursday Re-Do: Grassy Field Freehand 'Waterfall' Nail Art | Manicurity.com

About the Design

I think there's just something about summer and being outdoors! Even though the weather is so much hotter, everyone is out of school and there are so many fun things that happen outside. Movies in parks, playing sports, running through the sprinkler, catching fireflies at dusk - it all remind me of lush, green grass. I wanted to do a fun, vibrant lawn-inspired manicure for this month's theme :D

The Polishes

First I did one coat of China Glaze Bahamian Escape on all of my nails; it's probably my favorite sky blue polish in my collection! Then I used the corner of a makeup sponge with some thinned white polish to do some abstract, fluffily clouds. To add some depth I used a light grey to make the clouds look a little more realistic.

Then the grass! I used five different green China Glaze polishes - [name them here]. I used my various tapered liner brushes to do strokes and followed The Nailasaurus' Waterfall Nail Art Tutorial.

The Digit-al Dozen x #ThrowbackThursday Re-Do: Grassy Field Freehand 'Waterfall' Nail Art | Manicurity.com

Which do I prefer?

Do I like the original or the new and improved version of this nail art idea better?! I definitely prefer the addition of the clouds on the newer one, and the fact that the grassy pieces done in the waterfall style have more contrast with the different polish finishes (shimmery neons! cremes! crellies!). I think the biggest change in my nail art since last year is my inclusion of polishes with different finishes - for my guest post I exclusively used cremes, but I think the inclusion of shimmer now and then really kicks things up a notch. I think the newer version looks more 'nail art-y' if that makes any sense, but that's not necessarily better or worse than the original. The original grass looks much more realistic!

The Digit-al Dozen: Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini Nails

It can't be summer without a swimsuit! Today I have some fun, vibrant yellow nails inspired by the song Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. As you can imagine I've got some polka dots, some yellow polishes, and an accent nail with a tiny bikini painted on it ;D Check 'em out!

The Digit-al Dozen: Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini Nails - dotticure and freehand bikini nail art | Manicurity.com @emmathea

About the Design

I was never really clear on if the bikini was yellow and the dots were a different color, or if the bikini had specifically yellow polka dots? For today's manicure I went with a yellow suit with white/off-white polka dots. This feels like a really different style for me because I don't usually reach for semi-sheer glass fleck yellow polishes (who wants VNL with a sheer yellow polish?!) but I do really like the end result of this manicure. It's very cheerful!

The Digit-al Dozen: Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini Nails - dotticure and freehand bikini nail art | Manicurity.com @emmathea

The Polishes & Supplies

I did 3 coats of Color Club Daisy Does It on most nails - it's a beautiful glass fleck polish with duo chrome flecky bits that shift from gold to green from their Take Wing collection. I completed my shimmery nails with polka dots in OPI My Vampire is Buff and french tips in Color Club Almost Famous.

For my bikini accent nail I first did 3 coats of OPI My Vampire is Buff to reach opacity. Then I freehanded the bikini with some of my tiny brushes and Color Club Almost Famous. Finally I added the necessary polka dots with a needle-point dotting tool, and some touches of highlights and lowlights to give it some additional depth.

The Digit-al Dozen: Freehand Fruit Salad Skittle Set o' Nail Art

Summer is so luscious and vibrant, so I thought a great manicure idea for this week of The Digit-al Dozen would be a skittle set of 'fruit salad' style nail art! I love fruit, and I love the bounty of fresh produce available with the different seasons. Today I present to you some absolutely adorable mini fruit print skittle nails :)

The Digit-al Dozen: Freehand Fruit Salad Skittle Set o' Nail Art - miniature fruit nails | Manicurity.com

About the Design

I am really happy with how these came out! They actually look exactly how I hoped they would :) I wanted to mix pastel base colors with the vibrant shades of the fruits. I did the fruits in rainbow order starting with a pink polish and strawberries, then a pale coraly-orange with oranges, pale yellow with adorable bananas (my favorite nail!), mint green with pears, and a jade green with watermelons.

The Polishes & Supplies

I used a mix of tiny striping brushes to freehand the fruits and some various dotting tools - my favorite dotting tool is probably that needle-y sized one. For these I used a lot of different polishes and mixed a lot of the shades for the fruits; definitely too many to list here for you! The Digit-al Dozen does SUMMER: Swimming Pool Nail Art

I've been battling a cold + exhaustion the past week, but almost nothing keeps me from doing The Digit-al Dozen theme weeks! This month our theme is 'summer' which is a little tough for me because it's so vague, but usually the hardest themes produce the more interesting manicures. Today I've got some swimming pool inspired nail art for my #ManiMonday x Digit-al Dozen manicure complete with a super cute pool floatie!

The Design

I was inspired by images of swimming pools with lone pool floaties for this manicure. I love the different shades of blue and turquoise and the abstract shades in photos of swimming pools and really wanted to re-create that on my nails!!

The Polishes

I used Cult Nails as my base coat, then topped it with a CND sparkle top coat. Then to get the first layer of pool-like texture I used the saran wrap method with Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away! To add the wave-like texture I used a wavy stamping image from one of my Cheeky plates and Cult Nails Tempest (a white creme).

Finally, to add the swimming pool ring I freehanded the shadow first, then did the colored ring on top!
