Hey, Rad Raptor

Today's post is worth the wait, guys! The prompt for today is 'inspired by a movie', so I picked an excellent movie based on an equally excellent book - Jurassic Park!! I've got some clever velociraptor (haha) inspired nails to share with you :D

My base color is two quick coats of Zoya Dree, then I stamped over it with my beloved reptile skin/lace pattern (I think it looks like lace, anyway) from the BM-215 plate with a mix of brown and green. I based my raptor skin off of the description in the book, 'dark body with reddish stripes like a tiger', so I tried to get a splotchy, stripey stamp. I was really pleased with my stamping on this one since I used two non-stamping specific polishes, and I think this is my first successfully stamped image with multiple colors (that I like, at least). I think maybe my pointer finger is more successful in terms of being stripey in photos, but it looks sort of lame in real life - and vice versa with the other nails (cool irl, crap in these photos). Then I used some acrylic paint to do the eye on my middle finger! Acrylics seem fun to work with in general so far, but I definitely need to take some time to trim some brushes down.

Wondering what other movies inspired nails today? Check it out below!

ABC: K is for Kristen

Zoya Kristen is from the 2011 Winter 'Feel' Collection, which came out in November 2011 so it's only a year old or so (even though we're in 2013 already, yikes!). Kristen is a really beautiful shade of blue-grey, take a look!

flash makes it look really blue

Zoya's official description says, "Kristen can be best described as a gull gray nail polish with a mild bluish hue. An ideal cool neutral color that covers fully opaque in 2 coats." This polish is definitely opaque in two coats, but I have to be really careful when painting because it's got a super runny formula. Even if I wipe a lot of polish off before painting, quite a bit of polish runs down the brush mid-paint. I think the beautiful, unique color makes the annoying formula worth it for me personally.

Purple Rain

Apparently the weather was amazeballs here in Atl yesterday, and I totally missed out (I've been deep cleaning my house; i.e. Spring cleaning early). Today it's raining a bunch and there's even some good sized hail! So I present to you today's nails inspired by my weather and the song Purple Rain (by song, I mean just the title) - rainy purple nail gradient with some random rose-gold glitter!

I used just one coat of Sinful Colors Verbena and China Glaze Grape Pop, dry brushed the alternate colors on the end and tah-dah! The glitter is a franken I've been working on; I think it needs just more 'something' before I love it.

Under the Stamping Sea with HARE Oceans of Alloys + ManGlaze ILF

My favorite colors lie between green, mint, teal, blue, and periwinkle + glitter. So today I have a perfect combo of all the things I like! I used the copper and gold Essie chrome and stamped over ManGlaze ILF, a shimmery teal matte (more swatches here) and HARE Polish Oceans of Alloys. Oceans of Alloys is a lot more 'normal' blue out of the bottle, while it looks somewhat more teal in the bottle (hence why I thought it would be a good idea to layer it over ILF, but this is a story for a different review). I stamped some of the other images off of my beloved Konad S6 plate; honestly if I had to save one plate in a fire (because stamping plates could burn?), it would hands-down be S6. Anyway, look upon my glittery goodness!

Lovely! I love how the chrome stamping matches the gold glitter in the polish (show off!) and just overall want to hug my nails all day :D I pretty much only want to stamp over glitter; it's a sickness. But it's allllll good, because it never looks bad!

Check out the other inspired by color manis below; I feel like all the blog posts will be full of gushing about different colors and I can't wait to sit down and oooh and ahhh with them.

Tomorrow are starts the challenges that I usually wrinkle my nose at - inspired by a SONG? A movie, a book?! But the 'hard' challenges usually have the best outcomes!

Acidic Swamp Marble

I felt really blech about 'having' to polish my nails today, so I asked my boyfriend for three color suggestions to get me going. He said green, black, and teal so I used those colors for my watermarble'd nails! I knew I didn't want to marble all of my nails, simply because I'm impatient, and that way I could focus on making the marble-y nails extra awesome. I have started taping instead of using Vaseline before marbling, and that has helped a lot. After painting and marbling, I added some dots on all nails to tie them together. I am super proud of my index nail marble!!

Custom Kicks, black, Spring Green, Twiggie (maybe?)

Hooray! Love these nails! So thankful for the color suggestion and of course the prompt from the 31 Day Challenge to get me going today.

Don't forget the other watermarbles below!

Tomorrow we're getting into the 'inspired by' posts, which are always a fun challenge and let people get to know you better (movies, books, songs, etc.)!

Sally Hansen Insta-Galaxy

Hey y'all! Sorry this post is a little late today, but I spilled half of a giant new bottle of acetone allllll over my wood office/polish desk when I was doing some clean up on these galaxy nails. Thank goodness acetone dries quickly, but it did do some damage on the items on my desk - all the colored paint brush handles have melted off [onto my hands], and some labels have fallen off bottles, etc. O__O Anyhoo, I like galaxy nails a lot because they are an easy way to make a huge impact and I think they're pretty simple to achieve. While I was doing these, I thought these were going to look really awful, but lo and behold they look nice!! I mainly used Sally Hansen Insta-Dri polishes in this one (Blue Streak, Mint Sprint, and Lickety-Split Lime), but I think the things that really top it off (har har) are the tiny touches of black to give it depth, plus some tiny copper glitters and some flakies as highlights.

That's all the relaxed 31 Day Challenge posts for this week since it's FRIDAYYYY; I'll see you back here on Monday with new stuff. But *pssst* I might have a fun post this weekend with a *cough* giveaway *cough* since I've made it past 500 followers!

TGIF: Candy Lacquer Rarity

This week's TGIF: Thank Goodness, Indy Indie Friday! is 'Rarity' from Candy Lacquer! It's a mix of white and purple glitters (including purple squares!!!!) and some light blue diamond glitters, inspired by its namesake pony on My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. I love the colors and shapes together!!

This was one dabbled coat of Rarity on top of a yellow marbled base. Candy Lacquer polishes apply really well and the glitter is always well suspended; I don't have to dig for glitters when applying. This is sort of a subtle topper because it's mostly white, but has a little color, too. Sometimes diamond glitters are sort of poke-y and annoying, but these seem sort of thin (in a good way) and unimposing on the nail. Sandra from Candy Lacquer is really great about shipping quickly, too!

Now I'm curious, do you have this polish? Love it, hate it, meh it? I am excited to layer this with other colors!

Candy Lacquer polishes are available at her Big Cartel store ($8.50). You can view updates and new colors on the Candy Lacquer Facebook page.

ABC: J is for Just Busta Mauve + Studly Half-Moons

My original half-moon design for today's relaxed 31 Day Challenge went really wrong and turned into a weird 80's circus design... So I've got a double-duty post for you today! Just Busta Mauve, from Nicole by OPI, is my 'J' polish for today's ABC Polish Challenge and I embellished it with some cool square studs to make it half-moon worthy.

On my pointer and middle fingers I painted 3 coats of Just Busta Mauve by itself, and on my ring and pinkie I've layered just 1 coat of Just Busta Mauve over 2 coats of Sinful Colors Winterberry. Winterberry is a plumy taupe color with silver shimmer and I thought it would bring out the light blue sparkles in Just Busta Mauve. I really, really like Just Busta Mauve!! I was surprised it became so opaque so easily, but for future applications I will probably still layer it with something. This polish is crazy pretty and I'm sooo glad I finally picked all of them up at Target!

I *think* these cool square studs are from the Dollar Nail Art store. I really like them a lot because they're large enough to make an impact when I need one! I love the contrast of the somewhat badass square studs vs. a pretty glitter polish. Simple and effective, I totally see myself wanting to do something like this again in the near future (just no awkward stud french tip next time)!

Check out the other half-moon designs below!

And finally, don't forget to check out the other 'J' polishes Bee and Kerrie picked out for today! See you back here next Thursday for 'K'!!

Mermaid's Dream, embellished

GLITTER IS MY FAVORITE COLOR. So today I present to you a crazy mermaid-y mani for 'glitter' day. I had some loose large holo hex gliters that I [forgot about, and then found it like right before this day] and thought it would be fun to use as an accent for today's theme.

I hand placed the large holo hex glitters in a mix of colors between green and teal; I wanted them to look like scales on a fish so I started at the top and worked down hoping to get a good overlap. I was semi-succesful, I'd say. Then I went riffling in my 'opaque glitter drawer' of the Helmers and dug out Deborah Lippmann's Mermaid's Dream, which was a perfect match color wise. I used two thin coats of Mermaid's Dream; it was really easy to work with! Finally I added some extra large holo hexes to the other nails as accents to tie it all together. This was super over the top and crazy fun to wear. I could definitely see myself wearing full on glitter nails, like the ring finger, for a special event of some kind. It looks sort of messy in photos, but looked a lot awesomer in person.

Psst. Here is a semi-awkward video of me showing you my sparkly nails :p

MABB Q&A: What makeup item do you HAVE to apply?

Every other Wednesday, the Metro Atlanta Beauty Bloggers will answer a beauty-related question just for fun! This week's question is...

Quick! You only have time to apply one makeup item before running out of the house.. What is it?

This is a really hard question for me, because I can get ready pretty quickly but I usually take the time to apply at least three basic things - mascara, concealer for my awful eye bags, anddddd eyebrows (because mine are naturally sparse and blonde). So how do I possibly divvy up between these?!?! I guess I'll assume that I didn't take off all of my mascara very thoroughly the night before, so I'll curl my semi-darkened lashes. Then I'd probably grab a concealer/brightener duo and do my best to conceal and highlight. I'm also assuming that I have some sort of lip balm in a bag to use later in the day.

But to be totally honest, if there's a day that I'm running really late and missed my alarm or something you betcha I will take all of my basic makeup products (mascara, concealer, blush, eyebrow pencil, shimmery nude eyeshadow, and green eyeliner) with me and excuse myself to the restroom for 5-10 minutes when I get to where I'm going and do a "full" face of makeup anyway...

Totally Tribal, Dude

Ah, tribal nails - another one of my almost downfalls in this challenge. I think tribal nails are super cool! But I don't always know what qualifies as 'tribal' or not. No matter, I forged ahead and did this nail art loosely based off of tribal tattoos.

The base polish was one easy coat of Cult Nails Mazo (a sheer, golden polish that masks stains), then I freehanded the patterns with black acrylic paint - my first time using acrylic paint in my nail art! I really need to bone up on some brush-trimming tutorials because I wasn't super pleased with the detailing on this, but I do like the idea and the nails overall. My favorite is my middle nail!

Check out the other tribal nails below!

Tomorrow is GLITTER and I am really excited !!! :D

Delicate Details

Ahhh, delicate something day is the day I dislike the most in the 31 Day Challenge prompt because it's always like, 'delicate WHAT?!' and I feel so confused about what to do (flowers? we already did that... dots? we already did that... lace? everyone will do that... etc.) But I LOVE LOVE LOVE these super subtle, glinty abstract dotty nails I came up with!

The base color is two coats of Zoya Kristen (a blue-grey creme), then I added some gold rings and details with a dotting tool. My middle nail is sporting some Deborah Lippmann Here Comes the Queen down one side; it's a really pretty, dense gold flakie top coat (not to be confused with a gold flake tc, totally different story). The chrome details catch the light and sort of blend into the highlights when I move my nails around; so pretty and so perfectly delicate in person. J'adore!
