Amber Resin Nail Art

I couldn't pass up rocks & minerals week without bending the theme to include amber nail art. My thought process was rocks -> gems -> birthstones -> amber => amber is dried tree resin, I don't care - it totally counts! Similarly to yesterday's ritulated quartz nail art, I tried my goshdarn hardest to get some depth. Check these out!

In an attempt to make these as realistic as possible, I looked reallllly closely at photos of amber and tried to recreate the shadows, highlights, bubbles, and cracks trapped within them. Each nail is totally different! I sponged some colors here and there, painted some bubbles and cracks, stamped some trapped insects, etc. I also dibby-dabbed some flakies on; I used Nyx Gilded Glitter, a gold foil shard top coat, and Sally Hansen Glass Slipper, a white-clear flakie. To keep it all really translucent, I used one incredibly thin coat of the orange jelly OPI Y'all Come Back, Ya Hear? to top it all off.

Fun fact: this is my second attempt at this manicure! I tried it a first time yesterday and spent hours layering on the jelly and flakies, but it was much too cloudy (pretty, but not what I wanted). This is definitely a case of 'less is more' for this look.

Why amber? I am straight up obsessed with Jurassic Park. It's like my adulthood Harry Potter phase, everything is related to Jurassic Park. Scientists do something and the result is bad? Jurassic Park. Something in life goes unexpectedly? Chaos theory! Jurassic Park. Why isn't there an entire island resort that is Jurassic Park themed yet? I want more than just one ride at Universal Studios, I want entire Costa Rican islands to visit and contain giant dinosaur robotics!

Boyfriend was all "Hey, you should totally do amber nails! Because you lover Jurassic Park! You could do it with like glitter and insects and layers and stuff" at dinner this week and I was all "?!?!?!?!!! Did you look at my brainstorming list for this week?! HOW DID YOU KNOW?". Apparently I talk about Jurassic Park a lot...
