Digit-al Dozen: Fractal Nail Art inspired by IZMAYLOVA Spring/Summer 2013

One of the things I love about the Digit-al Dozen themes is that it's equally as fun putting time into doing "research" for the designs as it is doing them! I was browsing as many fashion-y things as I could this weekend and one dress that I found really striking was the yellow IZMAYLOVA dress Gabby Douglas wore to the Teen Choice Awards! I abstracted the general idea of the design, i.e. a bold vibrant shade of yellow with a couple of drops of blue to give it that awesome limey bite + some cool white triangles, and got some beautiful nails out of it. Check it out!

First, I'm sort of shocked and surprised that the first two designs this week are both yellow?! I love the color yellow, but yellow polish is usually not my bestie. Case in point: my base color today is OPI's Fiercely Fiona from the Shrek Collection, and I tried to do verrrry thin coats like a more well-behaved polisher, and I think it took me 8 coats?! I lost count after 5! My bottle of this polish is ridiculously watery, like can't-keep-it-on-the-brush-at-all, slides-off-when-I-pull-it-out-of-the-bottle sort of watery. No matter, this shade is exactly what I was craving for this design and TOTALLY worth it. My nails don't perfectly match the shade of the dress, but I'm glad I went with an off-yellow polish instead of a sunshiney yellow, like Revlon Electric (also because maybe you don't want to see me use it again...?!)

The white triangles were quick and fairly easy; I just did them at random with my tiniest striper brush. I love love love the triangles! Because they look so complicated I always assumed that they would be hard, but it's just like dots - super easy. Fairly sure there will be lots and lots of triangles in the near future, now, because I adore the simple, bold graphic you can achieve with just two colors - and there are so many colors you can combine!

Maybe it's the transition into "fall" that's making me lean towards yellows?? The weather is cooling down a little here and my teacher friend has already gone back to teaching high schoolers (so soon!). While I'm not at all ready for the seasons to be changing, they seem to be anyway!

Don't forget to check out the other awesome designs for today!

Check back for another fun fashion-inspired design tomorrow! I'll try not to do yellow, but no promises :p
